When we heard Patricia’s story we (And GAF who paid for the shingles!) couldn’t stand by and do nothing. Every other roofing company provided her a quote, Ami provided her a solution. Here’s the story of how she got a roof for a cake (No it didn’t have any fancy ingredients, but it sure was yummy!) Huge shout out to GAF for their incredible generosity in partnering with us to save this family’s...

    You didn't talk about Turbine roof vents. My roof has no soffits for a ridge vent

      @rooferchicks День тому

      I don't like turbines too much but my superintendent does. They used to be made better than they are today - nowadays after about 4 years they start rattling and clunking. I prefer a power vent if there isn't enough ridge for ridge vent.

    Good info - do you know if we can install two power vents across from each other on a hip roof or should be put them on the same side. Side by side they would be less then 6" apart.

    • @rooferchicks
      @rooferchicks 11 днів тому

      You could do either one of you need two - but that’s a lot of power vent. A regular power vent covers 2400-2800 SF of attic floor space. You can over ventilate and it will suck AC out of your living space if it can find a way.

    Hi there! We have a room above our garage that has tall vaulted ceilings. No attic space above but it gets super hot! What would you recommend to help ventilate? It would be appropriate for a ridge vent, but again no attic space. Thank you!

      The best thing I've found is a radiant barrier underlayment (one brand is Polarium). We've used this on about 5 houses and it has helped significantly. But last summer one of these houses we did got struck by lightening, and it traveled all over the entire roof. I think it was conducted by the drip edge and not the underlayment, but I'm not 100% sure.

    If you only put slant vents up top,.how would you get enough air in to push the air sitting st the bottom of the roof if you don't have opportunity to add soffit vents ?

    • @rooferchicks

      They make shingle over intake vents - O'Hagin makes a great one. You can retrofit these to a shingle roof.

    The best shingles last 10 years in FL if you are lucky. The warranties are a joke. I have an exposed fastener galvalume roof that is going on 30 years old. Once a year i check for any look for any loose fasteners. I have had to replace two fasteners in 30 years. It has already oulasted three shingle roofs. Its only a few thousand dollars more to go metal in most cases. Just do it.

    • @rooferchicks
      @rooferchicks 26 днів тому

      You've had fasteners with gaskets on them that have lasted 30 years without dry rot? That's impressive. You say the warranties are a joke, but I've had GAF replace about 5 roofs over the years under their warranty program, so I've definitely found them not to be a joke. I agree, metal is great. But it isn't perfect!

    • @rooferchicks
      @rooferchicks Місяць тому

      Yes, good catch! OSHA requires 3' above. Although that's awful to swing your leg around and I often wonder what that logic is. He does have a little giant - a lot of adjusters use them. We do too from time to time. They come in handy.

    Hello. Currently I have small ridgevents and 4 passive box vents close to the ridge vents to account for small ridge vents. Do you think that is allowed.

    • @rooferchicks
      @rooferchicks Місяць тому

      In my experience, those vents will work against each other and you will be only circulating air between those two types of vents and not pulling properly from the soffit vents. You might ask a knowledgeable roofer to take a look at it, especially if you think your attic is hotter than it should be.

    Shingles The Most Expensive From GAF Is Only 10 Years Warranty And I Donot Know Why You Say 50 ??? Metal Is Better And More Easy To Install And Faster. Aluminum Metal Has 5 Years More Warranty Than Any Shingle In The World. Amén.

    • @rooferchicks
      @rooferchicks Місяць тому

      I think you are looking at their standard material warranty where the smart choice period is only 10 years. If you get a Silver or Golden Pledge warranty, it goes up to 50. Look at this link www.gaf.com/en-us/resources/warranties/residential and open up the Timberline part and you will see what I mean. Metal can go on easy, but if you have a contractor who doesn't know what they are doing and don't flash it all in correctly and do the seams right, you have a very expensive big mess in a hurry that is almost impossible to fix.

    In Jacksonville, NC asphalt shingles only last 15 may be 20 years. Hurricanes tear beat the s from roofs.

    • @rooferchicks
      @rooferchicks Місяць тому

      Yes, the 50 years is a manufacturer warranty for defects. It does not cover acts of God, like hurricanes. Here in Texas we have a lot of hail, but it kind of depends on where you live if you get it all the time or not. Where my house sits, I never get it. But 15 miles west of me, they get hail all the time. So my house has a real shot at longevity. Even metal is limited to 140 mph winds - so I am guessing the hurricanes gets some of the metal roofs too.

They all are in cahoots for job security and Benjamin's around here Have never heard of a roofing job being denied around here. Insurance companies just pad the pro rate off your new roof. The insurance company pays for installation by W2 workers and you getbtge work done with illegal workers who often are not insured and you pay them much less than you would a w2 employee. Not my problem! Estumate based onfair pricing and do your mfing assessment as you should if you want a job. Else go fish! Thesemroofers always try to maximize profit by installing crappiest material with the cheapest crew of ilegal workers who arent insured or trained. They just have nailing experince but no actual certifications by the shingle manufacturer. Most literally speak zero English. So forget the sob stories from these roofers.
